The Stadium Committee has learned unofficially of the soccer venues being proposed for the Olympic Bid which may affect the outcome of our mandate. The following sites have been identified:
Hamilton- Ivor Winn Stadium- 60,000 seats
Landsdowne Stadium in Ottawa-60,000-65,000 seats
Sir Wilfrid Laurier Stadium in Kitchener Waterloo- 25,000 seats
The Toronto east Waterfront on Cherry Street- permanent 25,000 seats- expandable to 80,000 for Olympic Games and Ceremonies
Vaughan Stadium- 5,000 seats expandable to 20,000 for Olympics
The only two sites that are possibilities for the GTA are Vaughan and the Waterfront and would only be constructed if Toronto wins the bid. This will be announced in August 2001.
The Committee has also met with Downsview Park ( Canada Lands) and the Honourable Art Eggleton regarding the use of Downsview Park for a large capacity soccer stadium. This proposal is certainly consistent with plans that are being designed for the park and would complement the soccer presense already at the Hangar.
For the short-term needs of the Toronto Lynx, one of the sites that we are also exploring Lamport Stadium. The City of Toronto is proposing changing the artificial turf to natural grass for 2001.
As far as Varsity is concerned, the University is continuing with their plans to build student housing on the site and an indoor facility that would accommodate 7,500 seats for all their sports programs. The timeline for this is being established. We expect to hear by the middle of April if Varsity is still available for our 2001 season.
LYNX ON TV
The Toronto Lynx have three games on CTV Sportsnet this season, all from Varsity Stadium. The June 11 home clash with Montreal Impact will be the first, followed by the home encounter with Rochester Raging Rhinos on July 22 and the August 20 visit of the Vancouver 86ers. Times of each telecast are to be announced.
EXTRAVAGANT KICKOFF
The home opener is always a very special occasion and Sunday, May 21 will be no exception when the Toronto Lynx host old rivals Montreal Impact , the first visit to Varsity Stadium of the former A-League champions since August 23, 1998. While kickoff time for what has been billed the Kisko Millennium Extravaganza is 7.30 p.m., it’s worth getting there much earlier to take in the early festivities and entertainment, including Canadian superstar vocalist Michael Burgess and the pomp and circumstance of our Royal Canadian Air Cadets. The first 1000 fans will be given a free Kisco Freezie and a Magnetic Schedule This will be followed by the Eaglehart Singers and Native Dancers with their aboriginal musical movement. Add to that the opportunity to win $10,000 in our Kick-to-Win half-time contest and one of the better soccer clashes of the season as both teams fight to get off on a winning note. That’s what we call an opener-don’t miss out on what is shaping up to be a very special night! You could support your favorite team at the comfort of your home simply by playing 벳엔드 사이트 online.
